Reading of Noh drama ‘Between The Stones’ | Dublin

On Sunday, 23rd September, we were delighted to welcome Jannete Cheong, London based poet, writer, designer and curator, and the first British person to write an English-language Noh, to Dublin for an afternoon of reading of new Noh drama ‘Between The Stones’.

Event took place and was hosted by Royal Hibernian Academy, and was attended by IJA members, representatives of Embassy of Japan in Ireland and general public.

It was a great opportunity to everyone interested in Japanese culture and arts to learn about Noh and its development from ‘page to stage’. Event also helped to build new relationships and share ideas and learning through cultural and educational engagement both inside and outside the world of Noh.

Noh is classical Japanese theatre which combines elements of dance, drama, music and poetic text into a highly aesthetic for or art and uses elaborate costumes and exquisitely carved wooden masks.

Day trip to Lafcadio Hearn Japanese gardens in Tramore

On 9th September 2018, Ireland Japan Association organised a day trip for its members and friends to Lafcadio Hearn Japanese Gardens in Tramore, Co. Waterford.

We were happy to see so many IJA members, families and friends joining us and it definitely was a wonderful day spent together outdoors learning about the history of the gardens and exploring its beauty.

The Lafcadio Hearn Japanese Gardens are set in the beautiful seaside town of Tramore and reflect the life of Patrick Lafcadio Hearn (Koizumi Yakumo), who grew up in Ireland, and whose life journey embraced several parts of the world.

Japanese gardens feature many Japanese plants and Japanese architectural features and are a haven of beauty and tranquility for all who visit. You will also find a beautiful traditional Japanese Tea Garden, a Stream Garden, ponds, a waterfall and an extensive woodland area. Children are introduced to these magical gardens through a special children’s discovery trail, secret pathways, woodlands and Lafcadio Hearn’s fairytales and folklore.

After the walk through the gardens, we were treated to a delicious Japanese lunch provided by Yamamori restaurants.

IJA would like to thank everyone who joined us for this amazing trip, everyone at Lafcadio Hearn Japanese Gardens for hosting and guiding us through the gardens, and Yamamori Restaurants for providing us with delicious Japanese Bento lunchboxes.

The IJA celebrated our ‘National Treasure’, Mrs. Ushioda, at a Book Launch

The Ireland Japan Association (IJA) celebrated our ‘National Treasure’, Mrs. Ushioda, at a Book Launch on Tuesday, April 17th 2018.

The IJA hosted a very special event to celebrate the launch of memoirs by our founding member, Mrs. Yoshiko Ushioda – ‘Caring for Japanese Art at the Chester Beatty Library. My Half-Century in Dublin.‘

The story begins in 1960, when she traveled from Tokyo with her young son to join her husband, a research-fellow at University College Dublin. Beginning as a volunteer at the Chester Beatty Library in 1970, she would go on to become curator and accompany masterpieces loaned by The Chester Beatty Library to special exhibitions all around the world. Both inspiring and heartfelt, Mrs. Ushioda’s memoir will be of interest to both lovers of Japanese Art and those interested in Irish-Japanese relations.

Ushioda-sensei was born in 1931 in Mito, Japan, and moved to Dublin in 1960. In 1970, she began volunteering at the Chester Beatty Library, and was promoted to curator of the Japanese Arts Collection in 1980. She retired in 1996, and currently lives in Dublin with her husband. Mrs. Ushioda is also a founder member of the IJA.

The lunch was attended by long standing IJA Members, who each gave a brief synopsis on their first introduction and relationship with Mrs. Ushioda. Her passion for Ireland and Japanese art in Ireland was clearly evident. She was even described as a ‘National Treasure’ by one member, which was later confirmed by Ms. Midori Yamamitsu of the Embassy of Japan in Ireland.

If you are a fan of Japanese martial arts, come along to see three karate groups, three swords groups and two ‘throws’ groups demonstrate their skills on martial arts stage.

Love fashion? There’s a great exhibition of Irish and Japanese womenswear in Farmleigh Gallery, contrasting and linking the outlooks of Japan and Ireland. You can visit exhibition on the festival day, more information about it can be found here.

Who’s hungry? Experience Japan is delighted to welcome back some old friends and some new so you can enjoy the best Japanese food and experience also the taste of Japan. Look out for stalls from some of Ireland’s top Japanese food suppliers Yamamori Noodles, Oishii Foods, Wa Cafe, Kokoro Sushi Bento, Asia Market, Musashi Noodles & Sushi Bar, Fused by Fiona Uyema and more.

How to get there? Experience Japan Festival is held in the beautiful grounds of Farmleigh House in the Phoenix Park. Dublin Bus will provide a FREE RETURN SHUTTLE BUS SERVICE to the Festival Day in Farmleigh on Sunday 22 April 2018. The service will be greatly expanded this year with 15 buses running between stop 7078 on Parkgate Street and the Chesterfield roundabout just outside Farmleigh. Buses will run between 11:30am and 6pm. Please note that car access is extremely limited. You can find more information here.
