Takasago & Between the Stones | Wexford

We are delighted to invite you to a rare and unique programme of classical and contemporary noh ‘Takasago & Between the Stones’ to celebrate Japan Season of Culture in the year of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Noh is a highly aesthetic classical Japanese theatre style featuring dance, music and poetry. Acclaimed artists Teruhisa and Kinue Oshima, and Akira Matsui, collaborate with Jannette Cheong and Richard Emmert once again in celebration of the 2020 Japan Season of Culture.

Date: Sunday, 2nd February 2020
Time: 7.30 p.m.
Venue: The National Opera House, High Street, Wexford
Tickets: €25 Book here!

The programme:

Takasago, written by Zeami, is one of the most important and well known plays in the classical noh repertoire. It deals with the legend of the twin pines of Sumiyoshi and Takasago. According to legend, the spirit of the Sumiyoshi pine travels across Osaka Bay nightly to visit his wife, the Takasago pine, in a bond that transcends space and time. Takasago will be performed as han-noh, literally a “half noh”, featuring the very quick and strong second half of the play.

Between the Stones is the third collaboration between author Jannette Cheong and founder of Theatre Nohgaku, Richard Emmert, and the second co-production with Unanico. It explores how the burden of grief turns into a celebration of life, friendship and love, through the healing power of gardens. The lead role will be played by Kinue Oshima, the only professional female noh actor in the Kita school. Kinue Oshima was also the lead actor in the first Cheong-Emmert collaboration, Pagoda (2009) – the first time that the Oshima Theatre and Theatre Nohgaku worked together on a joint production. Pagoda had its world premiere at the Southbank Centre in 2009 and went on to tour Dublin, Oxford and Paris and then opened at the National Noh Theatre in Tokyo in 2011 and toured to Kyoto, Beijing (at the National Centre for the Performing Arts) and Hong Kong. Pagoda was the first time for a British artist to write a new contemporary noh using classical techniques.

Between The Stones: Performance Demonstration Lecture | Phase 2

We are delighted to invite you to attend Performance Demonstration Lecture (Phase 2) of the new noh drama ‘Between The Stones’ on 8th February 2019.

This performance demonstration talk is designed to introduce audiences to the key elements of noh and to have a close up and interactive experience of how a new noh is developed from ‘page to stage’.

Date: Friday, 8th February 2019
Time: 7.30 p.m.
Venue: The Mill Theatre, Dundrum Town Centre, Dundrum, Dublin 16

Tickets: €14/€12
Tickets can be booked online HERE!

‘Noh’ is classical Japanese theatre which combines dance, drama, music, poetic text, exquisite costumes and masks into a highly aesthetic form of art that has been performed continuously for 650 years.

The focus of the new noh, Between the Stones, is ‘from tragic loss to peace’. It explores how the burden of grief turns into an understanding and celebration of life, death, beauty and love; and the transformative power of gardens to nurture and heal the soul… It also uniquely brings together three Japanese cultural forms – noh, karesansui gardens and furin (wind chimes).

The professional noh actor, Kinue Oshima, the composer, Richard Emmert, and the author of this new two-act English language noh drama, Jannette Cheong, will share key aspects of how this new noh will be transformed from the poetic text to the stage production using traditional noh techniques.

This is the third noh performing arts collaboration between Richard Emmert and Jannette Cheong and the second with the Oshima family following the acclaimed success of Pagoda (2009 European Tour, 2011 Asia Tour).

Come and join this unique team to have a deeper understanding of the 650 year-old theatre of noh, and learn about the second
important phase of this rare, new collaborative noh project.

More information (brochure) can be found HERE.

The event is supported by Ireland Japan Association and The Mill Theatre, Dundrum

What is noh? And how is a new noh in traditional style conceived – from ‘page to stage’?

‘Noh’ is classical Japanese theatre which combines elements of dance, drama, music and poetic text into a highly aesthetic form of art that has been performed continuously for 650 years. In contrast to its minimalist stage, noh uses elaborate costumes and exquisitely carved wooden masks.

This Illustrated talk and reading is designed to introduce audiences to the key elements of noh and to have a close up and interactive experience of how a new noh is developed from page to stage.

The new noh ‘Between the Stones’ brings together three iconic Japanese cultural forms (noh, karesansui gardens and furin wind chimes). It was written following the deaths of family members and a mentor and friend close to the author. The piece explores how the burden of grief turns into an understanding and celebration of life, death, friendship, beauty and love; as well as the transformative power of gardens to nurture and heal the soul…

The author of this two-act English language noh drama, Jannette Cheong, will share her experience of noh and how a new noh is developed from the poetic text in preparation for a stage production.

This is the third noh performing arts collaboration between Jannette Cheong and Richard Emmert following the acclaimed success of Pagoda (European Tour – London, Dublin, Oxford, Paris 2009, Asia Tour – Tokyo, Kyoto, Beijing, Hong Kong 2011) and Opposites-InVerse (London 2017) .

To book your place, please RSVP by Thursday, 20th September by email: info@ija.ie or call: 01-6787008.
