IJA Japanese Book Club event featuring Irish writer and poet Nell Regan | PHOTO GALLERY

The IJA Japanese Book Club event featuring Irish writer and poet Nell Regan was held on Saturday, 21st September and was hosted by ElectroRoute, an IJA corporate member, in Dublin city center.

.

.

The event provided a special opportunity for book club members and Japanese poetry enthusiasts to meet Nell Regan in person and learn about the book ‘百人一首 – 100 Poems by 100 Poets’, as well as her work translating it into English with James Hadley. Nell’s presentation was captivating, allowing us to delve into the richness of Japanese literature and appreciate her remarkable talent for poetry.

.

.

We extend our gratitude to Ambassador Maruyama for joining the event and reading some of the original poems from the book in Japanese.

.

.

Attendees also had the chance to engage in a traditional Japanese card game and savor delicious, freshly baked Japanese treats provided by Gopan Bakery.

Special thanks to Tsugumi Yamamoto, IJA Vice Chairperson, for coordinating this event, and to our wonderful hosts at ElectroRoute for their excellent hospitality throughout the event.

Book of the Month | The Life of a Stupid Man by Ryūnosuke Akutagawa

.

.

For our autumn meeting, we will turn our attention to one of Japan’s great literary classics. After exploring several modern Japanese novels in recent Book Club meetings, this time we will discover the work of one of Japan’s most celebrated writers. You are also very welcome to join the discussion if you have read other works by Akutagawa rather than The Life of a Stupid Man.
.
About the author
Ryūnosuke Akutagawa (1892–1927) is widely regarded as one of the most important figures in modern Japanese literature and is often described as the ‘father of the Japanese short story.’ He has been celebrated for his technical skill and imaginative storytelling, in which he combines traditional Japanese and historical material with a distinctly modern sensibility, often exploring themes of human nature, egoism and the value of art. His literary legacy continues to have a significant influence on Japanese writers today. Interestingly, the book we discussed at our previous meeting, The Woman in the Purple Skirt, was the winner of the prestigious Akutagawa Prize, named in his honour and one of Japan’s most important literary awards.
.
About the book
The Life of a Stupid Man is a semi-autobiographical short story composed of fragmented vignettes. It reflects the author’s inner turmoil, depression, and growing sense of alienation toward life. Through 51 brief sections, the narrative offers glimpses into the protagonist’s memories, emotions, and thoughts, blending reality with fiction. It explores themes such as loneliness, regret, fear of death, and the struggle for meaning. The fragmented structure mirrors the disjointed state of the protagonist’s mind, making the story an introspective and poignant meditation on the fragility of life.
