While the nation wrestles with a shrinking labour force\, the Robot Revolution Initiative was launched to expand robotics into every corner of the Japanese economy and society. \nCircuits of Care follows anthropologist David Prendergast as he meets researchers developing and testing assistive technologies for older adults. From cybernetic walking supports to companion robots and automated sensor networks in nursing homes\, older adults and care professionals share their experiences of the practical benefits these technologies bring\, the problems they create and the unexpected relationships that can blossom. \nSpeakers: \n\nDavid Prendergast is a social anthropologist and Professor of Science\, Technology and Society at Maynooth University in Ireland where he was also previously Head of the Department of Design Innovation. David also worked at Intel for eleven years where he was a Principal Investigator at the ‘Technology Research for Independent Living Centre’ and co-founder of the ‘Intel Institute for Sustainable Connected Cities’. He has served as Visiting Professor of Healthcare Innovation at the School of Nursing and Midwifery at Trinity College Dublin. His latest book ‘Aging and the Digital Life Course’ was named a CHOICE ‘Outstanding Academic Title’ by the American Library Association and was described as one of ‘the two most fascinating books on ageing in the 21st Century’ by the Huffington Post.\nNaonori Kodate is Associate Professor in Social Policy\, University College Dublin and the founding Director of UCD Centre for Japanese Studies. He was previously Research Associate at NIHR King’s Patient Safety and Service Quality Research Centre\, UK\, and is currently affiliated with la Fondation France-Japon de l’Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales. He is the Principal Investigator of an international research project “Harmonisation towards the establishment of Person-centred\, Robotics-aided Care System (HARP)”\, working with teams in Ireland\, Japan\, Hong Kong and France. His recent publications include: ‘Can connected technologies improve sleep quality and safety of older adults and care-givers? Zoom login details will be sent to all registered participants before the event. \n \nOver a century after his death\, nomadic Irish writer\, Patrick Lafcadio Hearn remains one of the most famous Westerners ever to make Japan his home. In this richly imagined novel\, Jean Pasley explores not only Hearn’s stark\, lonely childhood in Ireland and his scandalous time in America but also how Japan changed him and how he went on to become one of Japan’s most celebrated and cherished writers. \nGuest speakers: \n\nJean Pasley\nDublin-born writer and filmmaker Jean Pasley spent ten years in Japan. Her screenplays have won numerous awards\, the most recent being The Audience Award at Cork International Film Festival 2020 for The Bright Side on which she was co-writer. Her new short film\, Ship of Souls\, which she directed\, was also inspired by Hearn and is due for release shortly. She now lives in Dublin\, close to one of Hearn’s childhood homes. This is her first novel. Jean Pasley is also a member of the Ireland Japan Association.\nProf. Mary Gallagher\nProfessor of French and Francophone Studies in University College Dublin. Most of her work centres on 20th century writing in French from beyond Metropolitan France\, particularly from the Caribbean. In 2003-4\, she published critical re-editions of the French translations of Lafcadio Hearn’s French Caribbean writings (collected in Two Years in the French West Indies). More recently\, she published articles on Hearn’s (Creole) storytelling and on the Creole continuum in his American writings. She is currently completing two studies of some of Hearn’s New Orleans stories and sketches. Prof. Gallagher has lectured on Hearn’s migrancy not just in Ireland\, but also in France and Greece\, as well as in Japan and in the United States. She serves on the UCD Japan Committee\, and she is the current convenor of UCD’s Asia-Pacific Research Network.

Then it moves on to review the current state of Japan and consider the implications for Japan’s expected international role\, before concluding on the potential for Japan-US-Europe cooperation. \nGuest Speaker \nKen Endo (遠藤 乾) is Professor of International Politics\, School of Law & Dean of the Graduate School of Public Policy\, Hokkaido University\, Sapporo. He is also Part-time Professor Global Governance Programme\, EU-ASIA Project\, European University Institute (EUI). \nAfter obtaining MA (cum laude) in European Studies at Katholieke Universiteit Leuven\, Belgium\, he obtained a D.Phil in Politics at St Antony’s College\, University of Oxford\, in 1996. The subsequent appointments include: Visiting Professor\, University of Tokyo (2003-16)\, Visiting Professor\, National Chengchi University (2008\, 18)\, Fernand Braudel Senior Fellow\, European University Institute (2009-10)\, Visiting Professor & Japan Chair\, Sciences po\, Paris (2005 & 2010)\, Visiting Professor\, University of International Business and Economics\, Beijing (2015)\, Visiting Fellow\, Ifri\, Paris (2017)\, Taiwan MOFA fellow (2018). \nHis main publications are: The Presidency of the European Commission under Jacques Delors: The Politics of Shared Leadership (Macmillan/St. Martin’s\, 1999) and The End of Integration – The realities and implications of the European Union (Iwanami\, 2013\, in Japanese)\, for which he was awarded the Yomiuri-Chuo Koron Yoshino Sakuzo prize in 2014. \nHis recent book focused on the European Complex Crisis (Chuo-koron\, 2016\, in Japanese). Both the Chairperson and the Vice-Chairperson shall be elected by the Annual General Meeting and shall hold office for a one year period and may be re-elected but may not hold the same office for more than three consecutive years.’ \nAs per Paragraph 13 of the IJA Constitution\, A General Meeting of the Association\, other than an Annual General Meeting\, may be convened by giving to the members fourteen days notice of such meeting and specifying the purpose\, time and venue during which a resolution will be put to the vote. \nThe IJA proposes that the IJA General Meeting takes place on Wednesday\, 24th March 2021 at 3 p.m. – before the start of the IJA AGM 2021. \n\nIJA Council 2021 Elections \nWe are pleased to announce that there were 17 nominations received for the IJA Council 2021 elections this year. Voting will take place on ElectionBuddy platform online from Thursday\, 11th March – Thursday\, 18th March 2021. \nEach member will receive an email with a unique access key which can only be used to vote once\, and your voting choices will remain anonymous. You will be able to cast your vote to elect your preferred nominee among candidates representing Corporate and Individual members (Ordinary Council members). She chose to continue working even after marriage and children and served the Japanese government in various capacities for 34 years. In 1998 she became the first woman to serve as Japanese Consul General in Brisbane\, Australia. From 2001-03\, she was Director-General of the Bureau for Gender Equality under Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi. \nShe was director of the Japan National Committee of UNIFEM (the United Nations Development Fund for Women). \nShe was a visiting research fellow at Harvard University’s Bunting Institute and the Kennedy School of Government\, where she conducted a comparative study of women executives in the US and Japan. She joined Showa Women’s University in 2004\, became president in 2007 and Chancellor in 2014. CAT productions then decided to stage it in Japan. It was translated into Japanese by Chizuru Urabe and performed in Japan in July 2018 directed by Eriko Ogawa staring Tori Matsuzaka\, Bunichi Hamanaka\, Shuri\, Shin Koyanagi\, Ayumi Tanida and Keiko Takahashi. \nSeamus Scanlon is the librarian at City College Downtown in Manhattan which houses City College’s Centre for Worker Education. It was co-founded in the 1980s by organized labor and academics at City College so that working adults could obtain college degrees with all classes in the evenings and on Saturdays. \nScanlon is a playwright\, screenwriter and fiction writer. His books include As Close As You’ll Ever Be (Cairn Press)\, The McGowan Trilogy (Arlen House) and Irlanda en el corazón (Artepoetica Press). His music has also been used in films including ‘The Emperor’s Tram Girls’ (2005)\, which tells the story of how the girls drove Hiroshima’s streetcars during WWII. Over the years\, Motoki Hirai has worked for the promotion of world peace and for people in need worldwide in cooperation with organisations such as The Red Cross\, Royal Marsden Cancer Charity\, Tōhoku Earthquake Fukushima Orphans Fund and UNESCO. Since the 2011 Tōhoku Earthquake and Tsunami\, Motoki has organized over 50 charity concerts across the UK\, Europe\, USA as well as the most affected areas in Japan. Motoki has been an artistic emissary of the Japanese Government since 1994. \nThrough music\, he has been actively engaged with charity work in the areas such as peace\, education\, healthcare\, food (e.g. Expo Milano 2015) and the environment. JET Programme participants are collectively called JETs. Ireland became a participating country in the JET Programme in 1987. Since then over 1\,200 Irish people have contributed to and enjoyed the programme\, including the 43 Irish JETs who departed for Japan in 2019. Irish JETs act as ambassadors for Ireland\, introducing all aspects of Irish culture to the Japanese people. \nWho is the JSPS\, and what does it do? \nThe Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) also known as Gakushin\, is an independent administrative institution. It provides various fellowships for researchers to conduct\, under the guidance of their Japanese hosts\, cooperative research with leading research groups in universities and other Japanese institutions. As Japan’s premier research funding agency\, JSPS carries out a diverse program that includes funding scientific research\, fostering young researchers\, promoting international scientific exchange\, and supporting the reform and globalization of universities. Its annual budget in 2011 fiscal year was ¥334.7 billion. Experienced in Ikebana since childhood. Her first public Ikebana demonstration was in California in 1989. Each participant can submit a max of 2 photos. SUMMARY:Takasago & Between the Stones | Wexford
DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to invite you to a rare and unique programme of classical and contemporary noh ‘Takasago & Between the Stones’ to celebrate Japan Season of Culture in the year of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. \nNoh is a highly aesthetic classical Japanese theatre style featuring dance\, music and poetry. Acclaimed artists Teruhisa and Kinue Oshima\, and Akira Matsui\, collaborate with Jannette Cheong and Richard Emmert once again in celebration of the 2020 Japan Season of Culture. \nDate: Sunday\, 2nd February 2020\nTime: 7.30 p.m.\nVenue: The National Opera House\, High Street\, Wexford\nTickets: €25 Book here! \n \nThe programme:  \nTakasago\, written by Zeami\, is one of the most important and well known plays in the classical noh repertoire. It deals with the legend of the twin pines of Sumiyoshi and Takasago. According to legend\, the spirit of the Sumiyoshi pine travels across Osaka Bay nightly to visit his wife\, the Takasago pine\, in a bond that transcends space and time. Takasago will be performed as han-noh\, literally a “half noh”\, featuring the very quick and strong second half of the play. \nBetween the Stones is the third collaboration between author Jannette Cheong and founder of Theatre Nohgaku\, Richard Emmert\, and the second co-production with Unanico. It explores how the burden of grief turns into a celebration of life\, friendship and love\, through the healing power of gardens. The lead role will be played by Kinue Oshima\, the only professional female noh actor in the Kita school. Kinue Oshima was also the lead actor in the first Cheong-Emmert collaboration\, Pagoda (2009) – the first time that the Oshima Theatre and Theatre Nohgaku worked together on a joint production. Pagoda had its world premiere at the Southbank Centre in 2009 and went on to tour Dublin\, Oxford and Paris and then opened at the National Noh Theatre in Tokyo in 2011 and toured to Kyoto\, Beijing (at the National Centre for the Performing Arts) and Hong Kong.
