She holds an MA in International Marketing and a BA in Business with Japanese. After studying in Japan\, Darina developed expertise in Japanese culture\, language and traditions. She has lived and traveled extensively throughout Japan. Darina has forged strong cultural relationships and has been the Chairperson of the Ireland Japan Association 2009-2011 & 2016-2020\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\nPaul Murphy\nRTE Journalist\nA fluent Japanese speaker\, his journalism career started in Tokyo in 1998\, where he worked as a writer\, copy editor for Mainichi Daily News. He worked for the International Herald Tribune/Asahi Shimbun in their Tokyo office. And he was also an English teacher at the Asia University in Musashi Sakai.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\nSiobhan O’Carroll\nTeacher and former JET participant\nSiobhan holds a BA in History and English Literature and a Postgraduate Masters in Education from DCU. Previous to this she obtained a degree in Environmental Management from DIT. She lived in Japan for a decade and a half where she passed level two Japanese proficiency from The Japan foundation. Whilst there she was employed as a travel consultant and taught English. On return to Ireland\, she instructed Transition year and Leaving Certificate Japanese in a variety of Irish schools. She became a Failte Ireland approved tour guide on return and since then she has enjoyed sharing the beauty of Ireland.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\nRonan McCarthy\nformer JET participant\nI grew up in Dublin and went to Trinity College\, where I studied Business\, Economics and Social Studies (BESS). After graduating I joined the JET program. I lived in Yamagata City. I was a JET in 5-chu for 2 years. I also worked for our local TV station\, presenting an intercultural communications show for 3 years. I worked full time at the TV station for my third year. Our show\, called Hello Yamagata interviewed foreigners who lived in rural Japan. The show started locally on Yamagata TV but was soon taken up by the Tohoku cable network and eventually went national on NHK. This meant I travelled to every prefecture in Japan learning about each regions food\, festivals\, dialect and history. It was an amazing three years in my life and I would be honored to tell other Irish people of the fun\, adventure\, tranquility and modernity that can be experienced in Japan.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\nStephen Whelan\nformer JET participant\nI studied History and Politics in college\, but specialised in International Relations at MA level. I have worked in universities in Ireland supporting student organisations and community engagement programmes. I also worked as an Irish diplomat. I was lucky enough to spend two wonderful years at Sophia University. When I first went to Tokyo\, I did not speak any Japanese and life was difficult. I studied at Gaidai and settled in quickly before moving to Sophia formally. Living in Tokyo was a very new and exciting experience. I very much consider it a second home. I am a person that loves nature\, hiking and running. Taking one day trips was always good fun. I visited too many places to name (for example\, Kamakura\, running from Takao to Jinba etc.). I had always wanted to see a different part of Japan\, and JET gave me the chance to return and experience life outside of a big city. Tokushima has a fascinating history and is famous Aizome (traditional indigo dying) and the Awa Odori.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\nEddie Hughes\nEddie lived in Japan for 6 years and revisited for multiple business trips. He met the Emperor Akihito twice in the Imperial Palace and the High Priest twice in ISE Jingu. He also enjoyed Kyoto and Nara and so many other places from Hokkaido to a Okinawa. He is a passionate lover of Japanese food sushi and sashima and is a keen festival goer.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTo register for this event\, please click below! \nREGISTER HERE!

SUMMARY:Imagining Globality: Japan & China’s approach to liberal internationalism
DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to support UCD Japan Fair 2021 this year and invite you to an online webinar ‘Imagining Globality: Japan & China’s approach to liberal internationalism‘. \nIn this talk\, Kiri Paramore\, Professor of Asian Studies at UCC\, will comparatively analyse the significance of ‘liberal internationalism’ as a political concept in modern Japan and China. \nDate: Thursday\, 11th November 2021\nTime: 1 PM \nVenue: This talk will take place face to face at Theatre C004\, UCD Health Sciences Building\, Belfield Campus\, Dublin 4 and via Zoom platform (please see registration link below).\nRegistration is required: https://www.eventbrite.ie/e/imagining-globality-japan-chinas-approach-to-liberal-internationalism-tickets-179208566647?aff=ebdsoporgprofile \n \n  \nFor most nations\, and certainly for postcolonial states\, comparison forms an important basis of political thought. In Japan and China\, comparative frameworks influence not only approaches to individual political issues and decisions\, but also the structure of political thought itself. Comparison is also central to how other countries\, particularly so-called “Western” countries\, imagine the politics of Japan and China. Moreover\, Western countries regularly imagine themselves in relation to “the East”\, “Asia” and sometimes simply “China”\, and imagine these places themselves similarly through comparisons to an imagined norm called “the West” and sometimes “the international community” – the imagination of which is reliant on comparison with an image of Asia. In other words\, comparison forms the basis of a symbiotic creation of national\, civilizational and global identities. \nThis talk takes liberalism\, as the basis ideology of the current international order\, as an exemplary focus of comparison. Beginning with a reflection on the divergent way WWII and the first Cold War’s history are perceived between China and Japan\, the talk moves onto consider the impact of this on images of internationalism and liberalism over the past 70 years. Contrasting these divergences\, and the current international tensions they feed\, with the current convergences in ideas of culture and nation apparent both in China and Japan as well as many other countries around the world\, the talk concludes by reflecting upon the continued influence and impact of liberal internationalism on politics today. \nGuest Speaker: Prof. Kiri Paramore\, Professor of Asian Studies\, University College Cork \nKiri Paramore is Professor of Asian Studies in the National University of Ireland\, University College Cork. His last book\, Japanese Confucianism: A Cultural History (Cambridge University Press\, 2016)\, was a CHOICE Outstanding Academic Title Award winner. Other books include Ideology and Christianity in Japan (Routledge\, 2009)\, and Religion and Orientalism in Asian Studies (Bloomsbury\, 2016). His articles have appeared in Modern Intellectual History\, the Journal of Asian Studies\, the Journal of Early Modern History\, Comparative Studies in Society and History\, the Journal of Japanese Studies\, and the Proceedings of the British Academy\, etc. He currently serves as chief editor of the Cambridge History of Confucianism\, and as one of the authors of the new Cambridge History of Japan. \nParamore was born and grew up in Sydney and studied Asian Studies and Asian History at the Australian National University\, Canberra (B.A.S. (1997) Hons. (1999)). While completing his studies he worked for the Australian Department of Defence\, and after graduation the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. Under the auspices of a Japanese Ministry of Education and Science research scholarship he completed two postgraduate degrees in intellectual history at the University of Tokyo (M.A. 2003\, Ph.D. 2006). Between 2007 and 2019 he taught history and Asian Studies at Leiden University in the Netherlands. He has been awarded grants and fellowships from the Institute of Chinese Literature and Philosophy\, Academia Sinica\, Taipei\, the Institute of East Asian Studies\, University of California\, Berkeley\, and a number of institutes and universities in Japan. \nFor more information and to register: https://www.eventbrite.ie/e/imagining-globality-japan-chinas-approach-to-liberal-internationalism-tickets-179208566647?aff=ebdsoporgprofile \n*** \nThis event is jointly organised by UCD Centre for Japanese Studies\, UCC Irish Institute of Japanese Studies and UCD School of Social Policy\, Social Work & Social Justice\, and supported by UCD Japan\, Ireland Japan Association\, Experience Japan\, SMBC Aviation Capital and UCD Japanese Society.

SUMMARY:Katori Shinto Ryu: Swordsmanship in an Age of Battle
DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to support UCD Japan Fair 2021 this year and invite you to an online webinar ‘Katori Shinto Ryu: Swordsmanship in an Age of Battle‘. \nJoin Aidan O’Reilly as he talks about Tenshin Shoden Katori Shinto Ryu – the oldest martial art in Japan that speaks of an older\, more pragmatic and frequently violent period in Japanese history. \nDate: Thursday\, 21st October 2021\nTime: 1 PM\nRegistration is required: https://www.eventbrite.ie/e/katori-shinto-ryu-swordsmanship-in-an-age-of-battle-tickets-179192669097?aff=ebdsoporgprofile \n \n  \nTenshin Shoden Katori Shinto Ryu is the oldest extent martial art in Japan and speaks of an older\, more pragmatic and frequently violent period in Japanese history. Through examining some of the techniques and being mindful of the period in which it developed\, we can formulate a unique insight into the Sengoku Jidai\, the period of the warring states in Japan. This period\, where power was so frequently expressed at the point of a sword\, is often one of contradictions and surprises\, which can be seen through the study of koryu and the history of the great lords and their machinations. \nTenshin Shoden Katori Shinto Ryu is a sogobujutsu\, a martial art intended to provide all the techniques required for a bushi to survive in this confrontational period. Armoured combat\, with a variety of weapons\, as well as iaijutsu\, the art of drawing the sword to defend against a sudden attack\, are indicative of the period\, as well as having their individual points that can reveal much about the time\, provided there is a proper understanding of their context. \nGuest Speaker: Aidan O’Reilly\, member of the Koryu Budo Seifukai \nAidan has been studying martial arts in various forms for over twenty years. He completed a master’s degree in Military History and Strategic studies in 2009 and has given numerous talks and presentations on an eclectic range of topics at a wide range of events. \nIn 2012 he was introduced to one of the few legitimate examples of koryu in Ireland\, literally\, old school martial arts from Japan. His interest and understanding of this subject matter has continued to expand since this fortuitous first introduction. He continues to train and learn to this day\, and frequently travels to Europe to train as well build better connections to the wider European koryu community. \nAidan is a member of the Koryu Budo Seifukai\, based in Switzerland\, under whose tutelage he studies Tenshin Shoden Katori Shinto Ryu. He is also a member of the Shuto Ku Kai\, through the Belgian Branch\, of Jikishinkage Ryu Naginatajutsu with whom he trains as diligently as possible also. \nFor more information and to register: https://www.eventbrite.ie/e/katori-shinto-ryu-swordsmanship-in-an-age-of-battle-tickets-179192669097?aff=ebdsoporgprofile \n*** \nThis event is jointly organised by UCD Centre for Japanese Studies & UCD Japan and supported by Ireland Japan Association\, Experience Japan\, SMBC Aviation Capital and UCD Japanese Society.

SUMMARY:Journeys to Japan: from Culture to Technology
DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to support UCD Japan Fair 2021 this year and invite you to an online webinar ‘Journeys to Japan: from Culture to Technology’. \nJoin Dr. Denisa Butnaru\, Universität Konstanz\, as she talks about the novel of James Clavell\, Shogun (1975) which introduced her to a landscape of Japanese culture and concrete exploration of Japanese society shaped by a variety of tensions and contradictions. \nDate: Thursday\, 14th October 2021\nTime: 1 PM\nRegistration is required: https://www.eventbrite.ie/e/journeys-to-japan-from-culture-to-technology-tickets-179188316077?aff=ebdsoporgprofile \n \n  \nMany years ago\, the novel of James Clavell\, Shogun (1975) introduced me to a first landscape of Japanese culture. Wanting to understand how history confronts present\, I started to engage in a concrete exploration of Japanese society\, which brought me to conceive a landscape shaped by a variety of tensions and contradictions. The figure of the “bricoleur” which opposes that of the engineer discussed by Claude Lévi-Strauss (Lévi-Strauss 1962) offers me a productive approach to consider the active and rich nuances that I could experience regarding Japan\, and explain how the current development of technological artefacts embeds older forms of social models while inventing further novel ones. – Dr. Denisa Butnaru \nGuest speaker: Dr. Denisa Butnaru was born in Romania. She studied English and Japanese\, sociology and philosophy (having specialized in phenomenological philosophy). She holds a doctor title from the University of Strasbourg\, France (2009) and she finished her habilitation thesis in sociology in 2021\, at the University of Constance\, Germany. Her areas of research are: sociology of the body\, disability\, rehabilitation and augmentation technologies\, phenomenological theories of the body and embodiment\, and qualitative methodology in social sciences. \nFor more information and to register: https://www.eventbrite.ie/e/journeys-to-japan-from-culture-to-technology-tickets-179188316077?aff=ebdsoporgprofile \n*** \nThis event is jointly organised by UCD Centre for Japanese Studies & UCD Japan and supported by Ireland Japan Association\, Experience Japan and UCD Japanese Society.

SUMMARY:Digital disruption\, political pressure and new opportunities: the future of mass media and its impact on Japan
DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to support UCD Japan Fair 2021 this year and invite you to an online webinar ‘Digital disruption\, political pressure and new opportunities: the future of mass media and its impact on Japan’. \nThis lecture will explore what international experience tells us about how mass media has evolved amid this contest between opportunities and threats\, how the Japanese media experience compares\, and what this might mean for the future. \nDate: Thursday\, 7th October 2021\nTime: 1 PM\nRegistration is required: https://www.eventbrite.ie/e/digital-disruption-political-pressure-and-new-opportunities-tickets-179171335287?aff=ebdsoporgprofile \n  \n \n  \nThere may never have been a better time to be in the media\, whether as a journalist or a publisher. Barriers to entry into the industry have fallen\, costs of distribution have plummeted\, new markets and new audiences are reachable\, and access to information is easier than ever before. Yet this state of affairs has come through a technological and business hurricane which has destroyed many old business models even while creating new ones\, it has brought new competition for attention from social media which also challenge perceptions of fact and falsehood\, and it has made the mass media a target for political pressure and even assault even as the digital revolution has made some traditional media businesses weaker. These trends are worldwide in nature\, but are happening in different ways and different speeds in different markets. \nSome prominent Japanese media groups have exploited the new opportunities by expanding their international English-language versions at lower cost and\, most notably in Nikkei’s case\, by acquiring the global English language brand the Financial Times and developing joint products with it for the Asian market. Others\, however\, are feeling a long\, slow squeeze from declining circulations and advertising revenues\, while facing new competition from digital-only start-ups and struggling to convert their own output for the digital age. Into this mix has come politics\, just like in Europe and America\, with nationalist politicians and governments seeking to influence and manipulate media while it is in this weaker state. \nGuest Speaker: Bill Emmott\, Former Editor in Chief of The Economist & Chair of the Japan Society of the UK \nBill Emmott is a writer best known for his time as editor in chief of The Economist in 1993-2006 but also for his many books on Japan\, which began with the bestselling “The Sun Also Sets: Why Japan will not be Number One” (1989). He is now chair of the Japan Society of the UK\, of the International Institute for Strategic Studies\, and of Trinity College Dublin’s Long Room Hub for Arts & Humanities\, and is co-director of the Global Commission for Post-Pandemic Policy. In 2017-18 he was a Visiting Fellow at All Souls College\, Oxford\, is an Honorary Fellow of Magdalen College\, Oxford\, and is an Ushioda Fellow of Tokyo College at the University of Tokyo. He is also a member of the University of Tokyo’s Global Advisory Board. Bill was presenter and co-author of a documentary film about Italy\, “Girlfriend in a Coma” (2013) and executive producer of “The Great European Disaster Movie” (2015)\, both shown on the BBC\, among other broadcasters. He is the author of 14 books on Japan\, Asia\, the 20th century and Italy\, the latest of which was “Japan’s Far More Female Future: Increasing Gender Equality and Reducing Workplace Insecurity Will Make Japan Stronger” (OUP\, 2020). In 2016 Japan awarded him the Order of the Rising Sun\, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon\, for services to UK-Japan relations. \nFor more information and to register: https://www.eventbrite.ie/e/digital-disruption-political-pressure-and-new-opportunities-tickets-179171335287?aff=ebdsoporgprofile \n*** \nThis event is jointly organised by UCD Centre for Japanese Studies & PSU Centre for Japanese Studies and supported by Ireland Japan Association\, Experience Japan and UCD Japanese Society.
