He is owner-manager of Jim Power Economics\, an economic and financial consultancy\, which he set up in 2009.\n.\nHe is a graduate of University College Dublin (UCD) with a BA in Economics & Politics\, and a Master of Economic Science Degree. He was previously Treasury Economist at AIB (1987-1991)\, Chief Economist at Bank of Ireland Group (1992-2000) and Chief Economist Friends First Group (2000 to 2018). He is a board director of Love Irish Food\, BMW Financial Services and Arboretum Garden Centre. He is a member of the Institute of Directors in Ireland. He successfully completed the Institute of Directors Diploma examinations in Company Direction in 2022. He teaches on the Executive MBA and the Full-Time MBA at Smurfit Business School\, UCD.\n.\nIn February 2021\, Jim and Chris Johns launched their own Podcast ‘The Other Hand’\, which is available on Apple Podcasts\, Spotify and other podcasts hosts. He graduated Department of International Relations\, Ritsumeikan University\, and received PhD from Sussex European Institute\, University of Sussex\, England. \nHe has worked in the Fondation pour la recherche stratégique in Paris\, France as assistant researcher and the Associate Professor at the University of Tsukuba from 2000 to 2008 and served as Professor of International Politics at Hokkaido University until 2020. \nHe served as an expert in the Panel of Experts for the Iranian Sanction Committee under the United Nations Security Council from 2013 to July 2015. During his career between 1989 and 2019\, he has held a variety of roles in Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC) across many markets including General Manager\, Asia & Pacific/Planning of the Global Advisory Department in Tokyo\, General Manager & Country Head in Sydney and General Manager of the Aviation Capital Department in Tokyo. Tom was also a key member of the acquisition team who managed the takeover of SMBC Aviation Capital from RBS in 2012 while he worked as Joint General Manager of SMBC Europe Limited in London. Breifne holds a BSc in Economics and Finance from University College Dublin and is a CFA charterholder. \nMina Takeshita\, Analyst Commercial Negotiation & Execution (Hitotsubashi University\, BA in Economics) \nMina is an analyst in the Commercial Negotiation & Execution Team which oversees the negotiation\, co-ordination and project management of the company’s leasing\, trading\, restructuring\, financing and OEM transactions at contract stage through to delivery and closing. It first analyses the dominant trends and issues in the contemporary world: in particular\, the dismaying performance of the advanced democracies\, the rise of the authoritarian regimes\, as well as the Sino-American hegemonic rivalries. Then it moves on to review the current state of Japan and consider the implications for Japan’s expected international role\, before concluding on the potential for Japan-US-Europe cooperation. \nGuest Speaker \nKen Endo (遠藤 乾) is Professor of International Politics\, School of Law & Dean of the Graduate School of Public Policy\, Hokkaido University\, Sapporo. He is also Part-time Professor Global Governance Programme\, EU-ASIA Project\, European University Institute (EUI). \nAfter obtaining MA (cum laude) in European Studies at Katholieke Universiteit Leuven\, Belgium\, he obtained a D.Phil in Politics at St Antony’s College\, University of Oxford\, in 1996. The subsequent appointments include: Visiting Professor\, University of Tokyo (2003-16)\, Visiting Professor\, National Chengchi University (2008\, 18)\, Fernand Braudel Senior Fellow\, European University Institute (2009-10)\, Visiting Professor & Japan Chair\, Sciences po\, Paris (2005 & 2010)\, Visiting Professor\, University of International Business and Economics\, Beijing (2015)\, Visiting Fellow\, Ifri\, Paris (2017)\, Taiwan MOFA fellow (2018). \nHis main publications are: The Presidency of the European Commission under Jacques Delors: The Politics of Shared Leadership (Macmillan/St. Martin’s\, 1999) and The End of Integration – The realities and implications of the European Union (Iwanami\, 2013\, in Japanese)\, for which he was awarded the Yomiuri-Chuo Koron Yoshino Sakuzo prize in 2014. \nHis recent book focused on the European Complex Crisis (Chuo-koron\, 2016\, in Japanese). She chose to continue working even after marriage and children and served the Japanese government in various capacities for 34 years. In 1998 she became the first woman to serve as Japanese Consul General in Brisbane\, Australia. From 2001-03\, she was Director-General of the Bureau for Gender Equality under Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi. \nShe was director of the Japan National Committee of UNIFEM (the United Nations Development Fund for Women). \nShe was a visiting research fellow at Harvard University’s Bunting Institute and the Kennedy School of Government\, where she conducted a comparative study of women executives in the US and Japan. She joined Showa Women’s University in 2004\, became president in 2007 and Chancellor in 2014. What can Ireland and Irish people offer to Japan and Japanese people? \nAmbassador Kitano was posted to Dublin in August 2019. He has over 40 years experience in bilateral and multilateral diplomacy at both Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) Headquarters as well as Embassies and Permanent Missions abroad. \nHe has authored and co-edited four books in Japanese on such areas as public diplomacy and disarmament/non-proliferation. He has also contributed articles and research papers to English academic journals. His research also explores the role of images in shaping our understanding of international relations and Japan’s role in the world\, from postage stamps and logos to TV programmes such as The Simpsons. \nHe has been invited to teach and research at various institutions around the world including the University of Tokyo\, Kobe University\, Hosei University\, Zurich University and Charles University in Prague. \nHe has received a number of teaching awards related to his work with the “Global Learning Opportunities in the Social Sciences” initiative at the University of Sheffield. He is a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences. \nThe respondent\, Mr Bill Emmott is the Chairperson of the Japan Society in the UK and was previously Editor-in-Chief of The Economist (1993-2006). Bill is a Fellow of Tokyo College\, University of Tokyo’s new interdisciplinary research institute. He also chairs the board of Trinity College Dublin’s Long Room Hub for the Arts & Humanities and is chairman of The Wake Up Foundation\, a charity dedicated to education and communication about the decline of western societies using film\, which he co-founded in 2013 with an Italian film-maker\, Annalisa Piras. \nHe has written eight books on Japan\, the first of which was The Sun Also Sets: Why Japan Will Not Be Number One (1989). JET Programme participants are collectively called JETs. Ireland became a participating country in the JET Programme in 1987. Since then over 1\,200 Irish people have contributed to and enjoyed the programme\, including the 43 Irish JETs who departed for Japan in 2019. Irish JETs act as ambassadors for Ireland\, introducing all aspects of Irish culture to the Japanese people. \nWho is the JSPS\, and what does it do? \nThe Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) also known as Gakushin\, is an independent administrative institution. It provides various fellowships for researchers to conduct\, under the guidance of their Japanese hosts\, cooperative research with leading research groups in universities and other Japanese institutions. As Japan’s premier research funding agency\, JSPS carries out a diverse program that includes funding scientific research\, fostering young researchers\, promoting international scientific exchange\, and supporting the reform and globalization of universities. Its annual budget in 2011 fiscal year was ¥334.7 billion.
